The Adelaide River holds one of the densest populations of saltwater crocodiles in Australia, a consequence of three decades of legal protection following near-extinction from commercial hunting in the 1960s. By 1971, fewer than 3,000 adult crocodiles remained across the Northern Territory. Federal and territorial legislation halted the trade, and by the mid-1980s the Adelaide River's tidal reaches had become a proving ground for conservation success. Today, the 8.6-kilometre stretch between the Arnhem Highway bridge and the river mouth supports an estimated 1,500 saltwater crocodiles, with adult males averaging 4.5 metres and some exceeding six. The jumping behaviour observed on Adelaide River tours is not a natural feeding pattern. Saltwater crocodiles are ambush predators that strike from below the waterline, using sudden vertical propulsion to seize prey at the surface. Wet-season flooding disperses the population across floodplains, though the spectacle of a crocodile breaching remains consistent year-round. Most operators run flat-bottomed vessels with shaded seating for 30 to 50 passengers. The hour-long circuit covers two to three kilometres, with guides identifying individual crocodiles by size, scarring, and territorial behaviour. The river also supports white-bellied sea eagles, whistling kites, and freshwater crocodiles in the upper reaches, though saltwater crocodiles dominate the lower tidal zone where tours operate.
